What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website when you visit it. They are widely used to make websites work, remember your preferences, and provide information to website owners.

FormaTeX is a developer API product. We take a minimal approach to cookies and browser storage. Some support authentication and saved preferences; others support optional product analytics and diagnostics.

How We Use Cookies

We use browser storage (cookies and localStorage) solely for the following purposes:

  • Keeping you signed in during your session
  • Storing your authentication token securely between page loads
  • Preserving your user preferences within the dashboard

We do not use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking. We use browser localStorage for product analytics (PostHog) to improve the service.

Essential Cookies

Essential cookies support authentication, session management, theme preferences and your analytics consent choice. The authentication cookie keeps you signed in between page navigations.

NamePurposeExpiry
auth_tokenStores your JWT for authenticated dashboard access24 hours
themeStores your UI theme preference (dark mode)1 year
formatex_cookie_consentStores your analytics consent choice (accepted or declined) — strictly necessary to honour your preference1 year
NEXT_LOCALEStores the interface language you chose, so the site and the dashboard open in it. Set only when you pick a language.1 year

Deleting authentication cookies signs you out. Deleting preference cookies resets the corresponding preference; it does not itself withdraw consent already stored by an analytics SDK.

Local Storage

In addition to cookies, the FormaTeX dashboard uses browser localStorage for account display data, preferences and consented analytics. Compiled PDFs may be cached in IndexedDB, and manually entered API keys may be cached in sessionStorage. Analytics events and identifiers are transmitted to PostHog when you consent. Other browser account caches are cleared on logout in the current release. Other devices and files you download yourself require separate cleanup.

KeyPurposeExpiry
ph_*PostHog analytics — stores pseudonymous session identity and event queue. Only set after you accept analytics cookies.Until withdrawal or browser cleanup
fx-language-offer-dismissedRemembers that you closed the offer to read a page in your browser's language, so it is not shown again.Until cleared

Third-Party Services

FormaTeX integrates with the following third-party services that may set their own cookies or use browser storage:

Polar.sh

When you visit the Polar.sh billing portal (accessed via the billing section of your dashboard), Polar.sh may set cookies necessary for their payment flow. These cookies are governed by Polar's Privacy Policy.

GitHub / Google OAuth

If you choose to sign in via GitHub or Google, those providers may set cookies as part of their OAuth flow. These are governed by the respective privacy policies of GitHub and Google. FormaTeX does not control these cookies.

PostHog

With your consent, FormaTeX uses PostHog for product analytics — tracking page views, feature usage, and compilation events to improve the product. PostHog stores analytics data in your browser's localStorage. Events are proxied through our own domain and processed by PostHog (US region). When signed in, events may be associated with your opaque account identifier; new identification events do not include your email. PostHog autocapture and session replay are disabled. You can withdraw consent below to stop future events in this browser. For more information, see PostHog's Privacy Policy.

Sentry

FormaTeX uses Sentry for error monitoring and performance tracking. When an error occurs in the application, Sentry captures technical diagnostic data — stack traces, browser information, and the page you were on — to help us diagnose and fix issues. We remove request bodies, personal context and arbitrary error messages before sending events. Session replay is disabled in the current release. Earlier releases enabled sampled and error-triggered replay independently of PostHog consent; historical vendor-held records are subject to separate retention and erasure review. For more information, see Sentry's Privacy Policy.

We do not integrate advertising or social media tracking scripts. Analytics (PostHog) are only active with your explicit consent.

Managing Cookies

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to:

  • View cookies currently stored by websites you visit
  • Delete individual cookies or all cookies
  • Block cookies from specific sites or all sites
  • Set preferences for how cookies are handled

Note that blocking essential cookies will prevent you from signing in to the FormaTeX dashboard. The marketing pages (including this page) do not require cookies to function.

Use the control below to withdraw PostHog analytics consent in this browser. This stops future collection and clears the analytics identity from this browser; it does not erase events already held by PostHog. Contact our privacy address for erasure requests.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by an updated date at the top of this page. We will notify registered users of material changes by email.
